Chicago's News Landscape Changing from Print to digital
Local news agencies have found innovative ways to adapt their coverage of national crises. Many news organizations are embracing digital journalism. Yet, even those that have been successful still face challenges from the many online sources which have emerged.

These digital players are often niche-focused and use social media as a distribution channel. They experiment with reporting styles and community engagement, and they specialize in a variety of topics. This has also created new opportunities, as some writers can monetize through services like Substack. The advent of this new form of journalism has seen the creation of a whole new category of journalists. They no longer have to adhere to just one publication. They can now build subscriber bases to newsletters that cover any topic.

Some digital startups meet specific community needs, such as in the South and West side of New York City. Some startups are aimed at holding politicians accountable for the policies they have implemented.

The McCormick Foundation leads efforts to improve local journalism. For example, it partners with Indeed com chicago suburbs (http://illinoismail.top/)-area media rooms through the Metro Media Lab to conduct audience research as well as strategy work. Additionally, the Chicago campus staff of Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism has worked closely with them to further develop their skills.

Chicago residents in all regions felt that the news media could be improved, but there were notable regional differences. Certain neighborhoods felt misrepresented and underrepresented by the mainstream media. There were also gaps in coverage for specific issues like crime and law enforcement.

Chicago news organizations boast a unique news ecosystem. Nonprofit and for-profit news outlets both operate innovative news programs. Some of them are trying to build a relationship between journalists and their communities by working in the neighborhoods they work in and ensuring traditionally underserved community receives coverage both in writing and in voice.

Block Club Chicago wrote about Adam Toledo being shot by police a few month after the incident. They took great care not to traumatize their readers, and did not include graphic video footage.

The TRiibe's online news platform is helping to build trust in Black Chicago. Three Northwestern University graduates were tired of Chicago being portrayed in the mainstream media as the "murder capital." They set out to build an outlet where their community could be heard and also give people ownership over its story. TRiibe has seen its efforts pay off: the content of TRiibe is widely shared on social media and has led to civic engagement projects in Chicago.
